Diadema setosum

Distribution: Variety urchin present in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Met recently in the eastern Mediterranean probably due to the migration of larvae through the Suez Canal.

Description: The anal orifice, black, is surrounded at the end of a red-orange ring, characteristic of the species and trailers. Its spines are thin and long (up to 30cm)

Habitat: Frequent coastal fund up to 70 meters deep. It is found in shallow waters in the coral reefs and seagrass beds.

Food: If feeds mainly at night, it is a major consumer of algae and dead coral.
