Stoplight parrotfish
Sparisoma viride
Distribution: western tropical Atlantic Ocean, including southern Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean to southern Brazil. It also occurs along the eastern and western borders of the Gulf of Mexico. Habitat: It lives in shallow waters (3-50 m), around coral reefs. This fish is strictly diurnal, sleeping at night on the reef in relatively open spaces where they can quickly escape predators. Description: The photo shows against a female individual, the male having a blue dress. It has been linked to reports of ciguatera poisoning. Food: Coral reef benthic organisms, including the dinoflagellate, which is the cause of food poisoning. |
