Radial firefish
Pteroïs radiata
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Red Sea, South Africa and east, the Society Islands. The Ryukyu Islands and New Caledonia. Habitat: A generally rare species that live in the lagoon, prefers dykes and seems to avoid the stony corals. Coastal, it occurs sometimes in areas where surge in narrow crevices, or along rock walls or in small caves. Description: Size usually observed: 25 cm. The body is reddish brown streaked with fairly thin vertical white stripes. Two thin horizontal white stripes run through the caudal fin. The dorsal and pectoral fins are each dotted with a dozen white, relatively soft spines, measuring between 10 and 20 cm fin. Food: fearsome predator, it feeds exclusively on smaller prey such as her small crabs and shrimp. |
