Salema

Sarpa salpa

Distribution: Mediterranean and Atlantic, South Africa, the Gulf of Biscay.

Habitat: It is found from the surface to 20 m depth.

Description: Salema is bluish-gray with horizontal lines 10-11 yellow gold. His eyes are yellow and his fins.
Like many other species of herbivorous fish, saupe has been described as resulting hallucinatory syndromes after consumption (see Poison Control Center of Marseille).
This type of poisoning called Ichthyoalleinotoxisme is revealed when the fish caught is not immediately emptied of its viscera containing large amounts of algae.

Food: It feeds mainly on small crustaceans and algae.
